“But having life experiences and carrying a good sense of humor are active decisions made by people — by human beings with ideas about who they want to be, how they relate to others beyond themselves, and how to make meanings out of seemingly mundane existences.” -- So simply and beautifully put, Helen. I love that you mention the sense of humor there, as I believe it to be a key trait that makes humans human. Having a good sense of humor as active decision: I find it brilliant. Kudos (from your semi-serious fan :)).

Awww Silvio! This is so heart-warming! Really happy that it resonated! This is one of the genuine beliefs I hold: humans make active choices (now reflecting on the word, "decision" is perhaps less precise than I would like. "Choice" is maybe a better word to underline the human vs machine distinction), machines don't. As always, thank you for your sharing of thoughts and the encouragement, kindred spirit! :)

"hopefully they’ll convince you that I’m a human of flesh and blood, instead of an AI without any hair to let down." 😌 but also giggling at AI possibly with and without hair lol

I'm enjoying you tackling these nuances for the not so enthusiastic about AI crowd AKA me, as you know. Whenever I read/hear an opinion on something, I'm always mindful of WHO that person is, what they align with, and things like the kind of work they do and who it serves (as in what populations they're benefitting or ignoring) and so it's been enjoyable to be able to pick your brain by reading your newsletter around the AI issues, knowing you do have a more optimistic outlook, but it's not overly/blindly optimistic and that you're interrogating what is problematic.

Looking forward to the next essay.

Ahhhh now that I've hyped up the whole thing I gotta deliver all the bonus tracks along with the bloopers haha :P Also yes I actually got hair -- so that's my one-up attempt to any AI that dares to challenge it ;)

You are absolutely right: incentives and blind spots anyone, especially prominent public opinion leaders need to be get more attention, and those questions are also what I try to ask each time as well.

I feel that blind optimism and bleak cynicism are two things that kill any discussion, nuance, and real chances of moving forward for progress, so my default position is always "cautiously optimistic."

😂 You're too funny, Helen.

Also, "cautiously optimistic." I love that!

I'm definitely on board with the cautious part lol
